My Berners love Lemonade and why I miss my AI buddy Fiona van Iersel MSc Marketing — King's College London Module: E-Services Marketing (7QQMO519X) Date: 28 May 2025 https://keats.kcl.ac.uk/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=758093 My Berners love Lemonade and why I miss my AI buddy Submitted: 28 May 2025 10:32 PM 1. How Are Brands Making Use of AI? Lemonade— If customer service were a dating pool, Lemonade’s AI would be the one that texts back immediately, remembers your dog’s name, and still checks in months later just to ask how you’re feeling. And I truly miss it. Brands like Lemonade are tapping into AI not just to speed things up, but to make service feel more personal, not less. Maya (the chatbot) helped me insure my two Bernese Mountain Dogs in under two minutes—without jargon, without paperwork, and without making me want to cry into my keyboard. Jim (another bot) processed a claim in seconds. Literally. I once had a human insurance rep put me on hold for longer than Jim took to approve nearly $500. These bots didn’t feel robotic—they felt… kind. They checked in on how my dogs were doing. They used cheerful, conversational language. Honestly, they nailed what most brands/people miss: making tech feel like a hug with a policy attached. Because frankly, the moments you need insurance are the moments you’re feeling the crappiest and most vulnerable. Since moving to the UK I haven’t found a replacement that makes me feel the same. RIP, seamless service. I joined marshmallow in the hopes only to find nothing I thought I was covered for was covered. 2. What Are the Benefits and Challenges of Using AI in Service Delivery? ✨ Benefits • Speed – From quote to claim, it’s like the Amazon Prime of insurance. Maya sorted policies in 90 seconds; Jim cleared claims in 3 (Lemonade, n.d.-a). • Scale – AI doesn’t call in sick or take coffee breaks. It scales effortlessly (Tzur & Vidra, 2021). I could post it at 3 AM in the morning because I was having a hard time sleeping and would get an immediate answer. • Emotionally Intelligent Bots (yes, really) – AI crafted with empathy can outperform humans in tone (Pires, 2021). Maya said “I’ll miss you” when I cancelled. I felt that. • Trust Boosters – Behavioral nudges like the “honesty pledge” actually reduced fraud (Ariely, 2019). Behavioral economics merged with machine learning—and it worked. I really thought twice before I Claimed something. It works! ⚠️ Challenges • Big Price Tag – Building an AI system that feels human isn’t cheap. Great bots cost great bucks (OECD, 2021). But you know what it cost way less than my Uk insurance. I think the Uk has higher cost for human employees so AI is a better way to go. • Bias Bingo – AI can be just as judgy as humans—if not programmed responsibly, it might approve claims for golden retrievers and ghost you if you've got a rescue (AI Now Institute, 2020). I have not experienced this though. That’s a great thing of AI it learns and adapts quickly. That’s more than can be said for a lot of humans. • Not Everyone’s Techie Aunt Sheila – While I loved the app, others may still want to speak to Barbara from Billing (Tzur & Vidra, 2021). I recommended this to my 80-year-old friend and it was all too much for her. • Privacy Shivers – AI loves data. And data leaks make customers nervous—and rightly so (Accenture, 2022). But then again, we relinquish it to Alexa that listens in in our living room and every website we see that stores our cookies for the perks it brings and write off the risk. ⸻ Final Thought (Or: Why I’m Still Lowkey Heartbroken and miss Lemonade. Lemonade showed me what AI could be—fast, smart, and actually emotionally aware. They gave me instant service that felt personal and kind. They were there for me when times got tough. I didn’t just file claims—I felt seen. Honestly, Maya deserves a raise. ⸻ References • Accenture. (2022).
