5.5 The brotherhood of the travelling pants
Read the case study on ‘Vineyard Vines and the Brotherhood of the Traveling Pants’ and answer the following question:
With the new wave of social media platforms, Shep and Ian knew Vineyard Vines would need to get creative to continue its success. If done correctly, a social media marketing strategy could catapult Vineyard Vines’ brand and top line much further than ever before. But how?
Course task reproduced as context. The response below is Fiona’s independent academic work. KEATS source ↗ (university access required).
Explore writing on this question ↗HEY I KNOW THESE GUYS literally, next-door neighbors right in the heart of hedge fund land which defenetly helped ! All of a sudden Vineyard Vines was required UNIFORM. I used to roast them:“Bro, it looks like your wife buys your clothes and she’s making you wear that as a woman repellent. Pink trousers and a smiling whale is a warning sign!” Dont worry they went laughing to the bank!
Everywhere you turn in our area had bumper stickers, pastel polos, whale hats, stores in every preppy watering hole from Nantucket to CapeCod Martha's Vineyard to Montauk. I got gifted the dresses (never wore one), my kids got the clothes (they had to wear them). It was cultural :Don’t underestimate that community. We support each other even if it means wearing pink trousers with a baby whale on it as a grown man. Behind the pink pants and polo shirts is a deeply loyal, supportive, generous group of people. All jokes aside, these are super nice people who show up for one another - whether it’s sponsoring peewee baseball (then you really have to buy their stuff to show appreciation!), helping a neighbor’s fundraiser, or rallying around a scholarship like the Brotherhood of the Traveling Pants. You can laugh at the whale, but you can’t deny the heart behind it.
And that’s exactly what made Vineyard Vines unstoppable.
They didn’t just build a brand… They built a community family. A lifestyle. A movement people actually wanted to be part of and post about.
If they harnessed this authentic community this mix of aspirational lifestyle and genuine human connection their social media strategy wouldn’t just market the brand…It could catapult Vineyard Vines’ reach and revenue to heights they’d never seen before.
Living the “Every Day Should Feel This Good” life becomes content currency
You can make fun of the whale all day long… but the whale makes waves.
And from our small community to the world committee... we are rooting for you buddy!
They are going to love to hear we are studying them... that's far out! Too cool for school!
